Corema is a flexible and fully featured software package for all types of biological collections. The system can be used by institutions, societies and private collections such as natural history museums, herbaria and zoological gardens.
Corema can handle most collection types and material such as Living material (e.g. plants, animals), Preserved material (e.g. herbarium specimens, insects, birds, etc.), Tissue samples, Genetic material (e.g. DNA samples, seed banks), Fossils, and Observations.
Corema offers complete information management with modules for Accessions and collection items, Taxonomy and nomenclature, Localities and collectors, Literature and web references, Maps, Images, Contacts and personnel, Reports and labels, Data exports and imports, Internet publishing, etc.
Omeka is an open-source collection management tools with a much more open approach. It is designed to allow the collection to be easily navigated while being hosted on the Internet. There is a large user community and many modules to be added. While it was not created with taxonomy in mind, it would be easy to adapt for any taxonomic needs.
